Much needed monsoon rains haven’t arrived in parts of northwest India. Locals are so desparate for the showers that they’ve gathered together to pray for the skies to open. Seeking an end to the continuing dry spell, locals in Ajmer City offered special prayers at a local shrine. [Khutbudin Sakhi, Caretaker of the Shrine]: “Rajasthan is hit by a dry spell. And I have full faith that the Gareeb Nawaz will answer our prayers and we will have heavy rains.” Rajasthan has been facing a major water shortage. Tourists have also noticed a sharp difference in the temperature and rainfall from other regions in the country. [Nazima, Praying for Rain]: “Only the shrine has water facilities. Otherwise, outside it is a huge problem. Drinking water is also not easily available. And all the devotees in the shrine are praying that Ajmer receives a good downpour.” To make the situation worse, the city suffered extreme heat conditions as temperatures soared beyond 104 degrees Fahrenheit in April.
